Debriefing
What is debriefing?

Personal Debriefing provides an opportunity for people to intentionally process the events of the past and present with a trained facilitator. Within a Christian framework and in a safe, confidential environment, people are invited to tell their story and focus on personal reactions to life events. Debriefing can work with organisational, re-entry and transition issues.
In debriefing, people are supported to grow emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically, so they can move forward into the future in healthy ways and thus be strengthened for the journey ahead. Debriefing is a structured process and is generally a one-off event.

Sometimes this process highlights areas that people may wish to address at greater depth through counselling. In this case time can be arranged to do this at a later stage either with me, or a counsellor in their locality.

What does a personal debrief involve?

A full personal debrief involves a 5 day stay, working through a structured and sequential process with each day laying the foundation for the next.
Arrival is between 4pm-8pm Sunday and departure after mid day Friday.
The mornings, Monday to Friday from 9am to approximately 12 mid-day will be spent with me hearing your story and taking you through the debriefing process. I will facilitate your debriefing by providing input and material for your self-reflection and processing in the afternoons and evenings. It is important to allocate time for this to gain the most benefit from your debrief.

Why Debrief?

• Taking time to be listened to by another, yourself and God can honour and affirm your personal experience.
• It may help you make sense of what has happened in your life.
• It can provide a neutral space for you to verbalise your thoughts and feelings.
• It may help raise self-awareness and areas of vulnerability and help prevent deeper emotional issues from developing.
• It may help to integrate/bring closure to past experiences and also provide an opportunity to celebrate your journey.
• It may help you to discern future direction and positive movement into the future.
• It can provide an opportunity for opening yourself to God in new ways that He may bring healing into areas of pain, loss and disappointment.

What can you expect from your debriefing?
I will seek to listen to you with authenticity, acceptance, empathy, impartiality and without judgement.
• You and your story will be held respectfully and in complete confidentiality. I seek to uphold professional standards and safe, ethical practice. Limitations of confidentiality will be explained.
• Building on my qualifications in nursing and counselling and experience in spiritual support and debriefing, I will continue to engage in regular supervision and professional development that I might be continually striving for best practice and accountability.
• Independence from any institutional or organisational structure. ie No reports or personal data sharing with any organisation unless this is specifically agreed to by you prior to the debriefing. In this case, you would have opportunity to access any report prior to it being shared with your organisation.
A personal debrief does require considerable time and energy. Most people find it a very worthwhile investment. If, for any reason, you are not able to be away from work/home for 5 days, or your energy levels are currently low, a shorter period can be arranged. However, the full 5 days is recommended to provide the optimal benefit.

You will be accommodated on the second floor of our home where you will have your own room with ensuite, private external access to the rooftop terrace and garden and sole use of a mini lounge/dining area for self-catering. The 5 day debrief includes self-serve breakfast each morning (cereals, yogurt, toast, fruit, tea coffee etc), but lunch and dinner are not provided. The mini lounge dining area is equipped with tea/coffee making facilities, toaster, microwave, fridge and cutlery and crockery for basic meal preparation. There are also a number of eateries and supermarkets within an easy walk or short drive.

We invite people who are staying to be our guests midweek for an evening meal.
This provides an opportunity to meet Clive and for social interaction.

Please let me know if you have any specific dietary requirements.

Prior to coming:

In order to best serve you and to prepare for your debrief, I ask each person to write one paragraph outlining why you are seeking a debrief and what your hopes for the time might be. You do not need to include any details you are not comfortable to share via email, just a brief overview.

Please include your full name(s) and any medical/health issues that you are receiving treatment/medication for that might be impacting your well-being currently, or that would be important for your safety.

And a contact name and number in case of an emergency

Confidentiality:

Information about people accessing Debriefing is not shared with any other person. During the course of your stay in our home or over the mid-week meal, people are free to engage in conversation, making "small talk", sharing about themselves as they are comfortable, but I will not disclose personal information.

We look forward to welcoming you to our home, Birdsong Waiata Manu
